Ahavat Yisrael – “Love of Israel”; “Love of the Jewish people”.

Alef Bet – Name for the Hebrew alphabet.

Aliyah – 1. The Jewish immigration to Israel. 2. The honor of being called up to the bimah for the reading of the Torah.

Anti-Semitism – The discrimination against the Jewish people.

Avinu Malkeinu – “Our Father, Our King.” A High Holy Day prayer.

Avraham – “Abraham.” The first of the three Patriarchs.

Balfour Declaration – British declaration promising a Jewish national home in Palestine.

Beit Din – “House of Law.” The Rabbinical Court.

Bimah – Platform in the middle of a synagogue, primarily used for Torah reading.

Cantor – The chief singer and/or prayer leader in a synagogue.

Challah – Braided bread eaten on the Sabbath.

Chasid – “Pious one.” A follower of Chasidism.
